Lyrics:
Maybe I’m mistaken, but
what happened to the days
when common sense and manners
always seemed like things to praise?
Why can’t we greet each other
with welcoming “good mornings”?
Instead we look the other way,
or flash a stone-faced warning.
What’s happened to politeness?
How did we go astray?
With some consideration
can’t friendship we display?
Why can’t appreciation
with a “thank you, ma’am, or sir”
assume its rightful presence
without causing such a stir?
Things once labeled “etiquette”,
like opening a door,
no longer are acknowledged.
Just expect to be ignored.
Some traits should not be overlooked,
especially telling lies.
So slip into your big boy pants.
Go on, apologize
Remember to remove your hat
when entering a church.
It also shows respect to those
whose homes you won’t besmirch.
Most used to say “excuse me”
when squeezing through an aisle.
Those words have long since disappeared,
along with friendly smiles.
What’s happened to politeness?
How did we go astray?
With some consideration
can’t goodness we display?
Some say I’m mourning thoughtfulness
we never really had.
I beg to disagree, my friends.
Your thinking makes me sad.
The lack of effort you display
that labels you a cad,
should be replaced with manners.
Showing kindness makes you glad.
What’s happened to politeness,
truthfulness, and “humble pie”?
Since there’s no time like the present,
start a movement, you and I.
Since there’s no time like the present,
let’s get moving, you and I.
you and I, now’s the time, not bye and bye
bye and bye, bye and bye.
